Workshop Overview
This training introduces participants to the foundations of play therapy as a developmentally responsive approach to working with children. The course explores how play therapy emerged as a clinical practice and reviews several major theoretical orientations identified by the Association for Play Therapy (APT) that guide play-based interventions. Participants will examine the therapeutic powers of play, discuss the differences between directive and non-directive approaches, and learn core skills used to support children’s communication and emotional expression in the playroom.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Examine the history of play therapy and key pioneers in the field.
Evaluate the therapeutic powers of play.
Identify key components of a therapeutic play environment.
Compare directive and non-directive play therapy approaches.
Identify foundational play therapy skills used in therapeutic play sessions.
Demonstrate foundational play therapy skills through practice activities.
