Workshop Overview

This training equips clinicians with a clear understanding of Z codes (ICD-10-CM) and their role in clinical documentation, case conceptualization, and differential diagnosis. Participants will learn how to distinguish between mental health disorders and contextual factors, avoid diagnostic inflation, and accurately document psychosocial stressors impacting client functioning.

Through case-based learning and applied practice, clinicians will strengthen their ability to use Z codes to enhance—not replace—clinical diagnoses.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Define Z codes and their clinical purpose in diagnosis and documentation

  2. Differentiate between a primary diagnosis and a Z code

  3. Identify when a presenting problem is a psychosocial stressor vs. a mental disorder

  4. Apply Z codes appropriately in case scenarios to support accurate clinical formulation
