Workshop Overview

This workshop explores how clinicians can identify, assess, and respond to suicide risk in children using developmentally appropriate, play-based approaches. Participants will gain practical strategies to observe and interpret risk through play, implement safety plans in ways children can understand, and use creative interventions to help children express and process thoughts and feelings related to suicidal ideation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify factors influencing suicide risk in children.

  2. Demonstrate play-based suicide risk assessment techniques.

  3. Develop age-appropriate safety plans in play therapy

  4. Practice play-based interventions to help children express thoughts and feelings related to suicidal ideation

Schedule:

  • 10:30 – 11:00am: Registration and Sign-In

  • 11:00 – 11:45am: Understanding Suicide Risk in Children: Trauma, Stress, and Development

  • 11:45 – 12:00pm: Safety Planning with Children

  • 12:00 – 12:45pm: Play-Based Intervention Practice

  • 12:45 – 1:00pm: Wrap-up, Resources, and Q&A
