Workshop Overview
This advanced training builds upon foundational assessment skills to strengthen clinicians’ ability to move from observation to intentional, theoretically grounded treatment planning in play therapy. Participants will deepen their case conceptualization skills by organizing play themes, developmental factors, attachment dynamics, trauma indicators, and neurobiological stress responses into clear clinical formulations that guide purposeful intervention. Through structured frameworks, case examples, and applied exercises, clinicians will enhance their ability to differentiate developmentally typical play from clinically significant patterns, determine intervention timing and modality, and develop theory-consistent treatment plans that align with child readiness and caregiver capacity
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
Synthesize play therapy assessment data (e.g., play themes, developmental level, attachment patterns, and trauma indicators) into a cohesive, theory-informed case conceptualization.
Differentiate developmentally typical play behaviors from clinically significant patterns using established play therapy frameworks and developmental benchmarks.
Apply neurobiological and stress-response concepts (e.g., regulation, arousal states) to inform clinical decision-making and intervention planning in play therapy.
Formulate treatment goals and interventions that are theoretically grounded (e.g., CCPT, directive, attachment-based, EMDR-informed) and aligned with identified play themes and client needs.
Determine appropriate timing and modality of interventions based on child readiness, presenting concerns, and therapeutic pacing.
Integrate caregiver capacity and involvement into treatment planning to support generalization of therapeutic gains and strengthen relational outcomes.
Develop a structured, written play therapy treatment plan that reflects clear clinical reasoning, theoretical consistency, and measurable goals.
Evaluate and adjust treatment plans based on ongoing play observations, client response, and shifts in clinical presentation.
